Job Description


Under the general direction of the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) or under the supervision of an assigned administrator, the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLP/A) is to provide direct assistance in treating disorders in students related to articulation and phonology, language processing, hearing, and alternative and augmentative communication.

Assignments in this classification are 9.25 months per year and 6 hours per day.
Current registration and certification by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the time of application. Incumbents must maintain current registration throughout employment in this classification.

Conducts speech-language screening, without interpretation, using screening protocols developed by the supervising Speech and Language Pathologist.
Provides direct treatment assistance to identify students under the supervision of a Speech-Language Pathologist.
Follows and implements documented Individualized Educational Programs (IEP's) developed by a supervising SLP.
Documents student progress toward meeting established objectives, and reports the information to a supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
Assists SLP during assessment, assisting with formal documentation, preparing materials, and performing clerical duties for a supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
Schedules activities and prepares charts, records, graphs, and data.
Performs checks and maintenance of equipment augmentative communication devices.
Participates in meetings and in-service training programs. Assists with speech-language pathology research projects, in-service training, and family or community education.
Assists with hearing screenings under the direct supervision of a licensed Speech and Language Pathologist. Minimum Requirements:
Current registration and certification by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the time of application. Incumbents must maintain current registration throughout employment in this classification.

Any combination of education, training and/or experience that could likely provide the required desired skills, knowledge or abilities may be considered. A minimum six months experience working with individuals with speech and language disabilities in a structured environment is highly desirable.

Employment in this classification requires the possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license; use of a personal automobile; and the ability to be insured and maintain vehicle and property damage insurance.

Salary: Listed salary amounts indicate the first and last steps of the range for the position.
Probationary Period: 130 days of paid service.
Hiring for this position is on as-needed basis and could occur at anytime during a school year. Immediate hiring may not take place and t here is no regular exam or hiring schedule. A review of applicants' experience and qualifications is conducted periodically and in the order that applications are received. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the District will be invited to participate in the next step of the examination process. The examination will include a technical interview.

Prior to employment, a candidate must submit proof of freedom from tuberculosis. Also required after an offer of employment are a pre-employment physical exam (district-paid) and fingerprint clearance with the Department of Justice.
