Sign Language Interpreter
The interpreter’s role is to facilitate communication (signing when spoken English is heard and voicing for the student who signs). The interpreter should be respected as a contributing member of the educational university.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Contact the professor each semester before each class begins.
• Clarify the role of Interpreter to all parties involved.
• Become familiar with the sign vocabulary.
• Sit or stand where the student can easily see him/her, the teacher, and the board.
• Interpret lecture, discussions, demonstrations, and announcements as accurately as possible.
• Ask for clarification when information is not clear.
• Do not participate in class discussion or activities.
• When necessary remind the teacher and student to communicate directly with each other.
• Follow the Code of Ethics for Professional Interpreters.
• Professional and respectful attitude to all colleagues.
• Participate in staff meetings, workshops and professional organizations.
• Work effectively in a team environment, receive support from and provide support to colleagues.
• Possess the ability to work effectively in a fast paced, dynamic environment in a variety of settings and locations.
• Work with intern students or provide mentoring when appropriate and as assigned.
• Ability to use technology as well as email and internet navigation.
• Ability to participate in Zoom meetings from home.
• Demonstrate a willingness and ability to complete additional and other duties as assigned.
• Interpret activities on campus as determined by the Coordinator of Interpreter Services.
• When problems arise, seek assistance from the Coordinator of Interpreter Services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Oklahoma QAST Certification as an American Sign Language Interpreter and/or transliterator; knowledge of interpreting and transliteration services provided in an educational environment; ability to receptively and expressively communicate with deaf/hard of hearing students; ability to multi-task; ability to work in a fast paced and ever changing environment.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor degree and/or appropriate experience in Human Resources, Education or Deafness related field is highly desired.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
• Ability to interpret in ASL for extended periods of time.
• Possess the ability to work in a variety settings, both indoor, and outdoor, with variable lightning and temperatures.
• Ability to independently travel in the local area.
SALARY RANGE: $23,000 - $24,000
