Security Officer - SECURITY POLSON Department, Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, Polson, MT

The Safety Management Department is a centralized location for managing a wide variety of programs that provide for the safety and security of Providence St. Joseph Medical Center patients, visitors, employees and property. Members of the Safety Management Department are responsible for patrolling over 2.2 million square feet of SPHHC property on two separate campuses. The Safety & Security Officer is the core of the Safety Management Department and has four primary areas of responsibility and multiple collateral responsibilities. Each Officer serves as a valuable resource to SJMC employees 24/7. The primary responsibilities include Patient Care & Transport, Safety, Security and Hazardous Material Decontamination:

  1. Safety. Performs assigned tasks and activities in accordance with hospital policy, departmental policy and departmental standard operating procedures in an effort to provide a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and staff.

a. Helipad Safety Officer. Serves as the Safety Officer for rotor wing aircraft landings and as patient transports from the helipads to the Emergency Room or other destination as required for continuum of care.

b. Safety Officer. Works closely with Hospital Leadership, nursing staff, Facilities Engineers, non-clinical staff, patients, and visitors to ensure a safe environment of care. Monitors Departmental Environment of Care boards. Conducts daily interior and exterior safety patrols (pedestrian & vehicle), completes Prisoner/Patient compliance checks, monthly emergency and safety equipment checks, quarterly fire drills, and addresses safety issues on the spot with available resources. Serves as hospital liaison with Law Enforcement, Fire Department and Correctional Facility Officers. Carries out specific duties as required by hospital plans, policies, standing operating procedures and other duties as assigned by the Safety and Emergency Preparedness Director.

c. Staff & Patient Education. Conducts staff and patient education sessions based on a variety of safety and security issues on the patient floors, classrooms and ancillary areas of the hospital. Must maintain a working knowledge of current hospital policies and response procedures.

d. Emergency Response: Responsible for managing staff response to fire alarms, infant abduction alarms and calls for assistance during a response team, patient evacuation or hazardous material spill. Directs the actions of fellow caregivers during responses to aggressive patients, hard and soft restraint application, weapon calls for service and active shooter situations.

  1. Security.

a. Security Officer. Performs ongoing security assessments, conducts interior and exterior security patrols (pedestrian & vehicle) monitors activity in the hospital, conducts preliminary investigations, writes and submits incident reports as required. Updates security procedures and informs Safety Management Staff.

b. Access Control. Maintains controlled access to the hospital facilities at all times. Locks/unlocks entrances on a specific schedule, maintains awareness of visitors, vendors, contractors and Law Enforcement Officers in the facility. Monitors and restricts access to high risk areas using video surveillance system, elevator and door controls. Able to restrict access to portions of the hospital, parking garages, parking lots and other property as required.

c. Staff & Patient Education. Conducts education sessions on personal security issues, property security, and emergency responses as required. Must be familiar with hospital policies, standing operating procedures and have a general knowledge of city ordinances and laws.

d. Emergency Response. Must be able to immediately respond to calls for assistance and Crisis Response Teams, with other Security Officers and/or Law Enforcement Officers. Must be able to respond to and direct fellow caregivers during emergency response codes. Upon activation of the Hospital's Incident Command System the Security Officer may be assigned as Safety Director or Law Enforcement Liaison. These responses require one on one interaction during many high risk situations, especially while working directly with anxious and violently aggressive patients and visitors with mental health and substance abuse issues.

e. Communications. Security Officers must be able to effectively communicate and relay sensitive and pertinent information vital to maintaining the Physical Security of the facilities to oncoming Security Officers, Dispatch, Facilities Engineering and Safety Manager.

  1. Hazardous Material Decontamination.

a. Emergency Response. Must be able to locate Material Safety Data Sheets online utilizing the MAXCOM software. Must be able to respond to a hazardous material spill and direct other staff members in isolating the spill, cleaning the area and disposing of contaminated items in accordance with established policies and procedures. In the event of an external HAZMAT event, the Security Officer must be able to set up the Decontamination System according to the number of expected patients. Will be able to don PPE appropriate to the level of protection required. Directly responsible for the hands on decontamination of patients, visitors and caregivers exposed to hazardous materials. Will be able to serve as hospital liaison to the responding Fire Department personnel.

b. Staff & Patient Education. All Safety Officers must be prepared to present educational courses of varying length and degree of detail to hospital staff on HAZMAT Decontamination procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Within 60 days of hire: Montana PSP Security Guard License - Montana Board of Private Security

  • Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association

  • Within 1 year of hire: International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) Basic Security Officer Certified included in initial training

  • Within 90 days of hire: Management of Aggressive Behavior Certification included in initial training

  • Prior typing/keyboard experience required to enter and retrieve data in an accurate and timely manner

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree

  • 2 years experience military, law enforcement or private security
