Department Description

Job Summary

Under the direction from the Production Department staff, provide technical theatrical and events-based support for performances and ancillary events in the Mondavi Center. Work includes load in, set up, operation, and strike of lighting, video, and sound equipment; some carpentry; and rigging and fly rail operation. Act as a lead technician in one or more of these departments, based on experience. Perform minor maintenance and repair of theatrical and event-based equipment. Perform event and stage set-ups and strikes based on supplied diagrams, including but not limited to performances, banquets, conference events, and receptions. Interact directly and professionally with local and traveling artists and clients to ensure their needs are met. Maintain a positive working environment and high standards of safety, craftsmanship, and efficiency.

These are limited appointment positions with less than 1,000 total working hours. These positions have the possibility of extension, but will not convert to career status. Hours of work are scheduled sporadically as Mondavi Center's events schedule dictates.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position.

  • Experience in technical theater or stage production.
  • Journeyman-level experience in technical theatre or stage production in at least one of the following departments: audio, lighting, rigging/stage carpentry, or video.
  • Experience and knowledge to use technical theatrical equipment, including stage lighting, amplified sound and stage equipment, tools of costume and wardrobe maintenance and repair, stage rigging and counterweight systems, and professional-grade video projection systems.
  • Experience to deliver excellent customer service.
  • Familiarity with customer service practices and procedures. Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to learn and use the MC scheduling software.




Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using power and hand tools.
  • Good written communication skills.
  • Problem solving and organizational skills to assist in resolving event details, issues and/or problems.
  • Ability to organize and lead student and professional stage crew.




Key Responsibilities



50% - Stage Technician


Oversee set up and operation of theatrical lighting, audio, video, and rigging equipment based on applicable experience. Operate equipment during performances and events. Perform maintenance or minor repairs. Oversee small crews on projects and work directly with clients during the set-up and operation of events to ensure technical elements are executed. Support and observe the Mondavi Center's safety policies and work practices at all times. Assist with on-the-job training and coaching of both students and developing Stagehands and Assistant Stage Technicians. Job duties based on experience as follows:


Audio - Lead crews in the set-up, operation, and strike of professional audio equipment. Act as a front of house engineer for events and performances as needed. Act as a monitor engineer for live music events. Work directly with touring musicians and artists. Detect, diagnose, and resolve audio problems. Act as a deck audio technician and assist other audio engineers. Assist with the enforcement of the Mondavi Center's policy governing maximum SPL.


Lighting - Lead crews in the hang, focus, operation, and strike of professional lighting equipment. Act as a lead deck electrician or light board programmer and operator during events and performances. Focus lighting from Genie personnel lifts, catwalks, and other limited access locations. Work directly with touring technicians and designers. Detect, diagnose, and resolve problems with lighting equipment. Execute lighting hangs based on supplied plots and diagrams. Create and execute lighting designs for live music events and other events as needed in both Jackson Hall and the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre.


Carpentry/Rigging - Act as a rigger in both Jackson Hall and the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre. Ensure the safe rigging, operation, and strike of equipment based on Mondavi Center safety policies and industry rigging standards. Rig and operate chain motors. Act as a head flyperson for pre-hang, load-in, performance, and load-out in Jackson Hall on a manual counterweight rigging system. Oversee crews in moving of theatrical drapery and scenery. Lead and oversee stage set-ups, including riser construction and scenery assembly.


Video - Act as a lead video technician for Mondavi Center events, including but not limited to performances, film presentations, corporate meetings, and conferences. Set up, operate, and strike professional projection and image-processing systems and projection screens. Work directly with clients to ensure their presentation needs are met. Work with DVD and Blu-ray players, Apple and PC laptops and computers, PowerPoint and other slide presentations, and other video media. Detect, diagnose, and resolve problems with video equipment and playback devices, including computers.






Wardrobe - Act as lead wardrobe technician for Jackson Hall. Set up, operate, and strike all wardrobe equipment. Assist with the maintenance of wardrobe equipment and wardrobe room. Assist with offstage quick changes. Make major or minor sewing repairs. Correctly use laundry and wardrobe equipment, including but not limited to washers, dryers, irons and steamers.



50% - Stagehand


Set up and strike theatrical equipment for rehearsals, performances, and non-performance events in traditional theatre spaces as well as other non-traditional spaces. Hang and focus theatrical lighting and video equipment. Set up and strike sound equipment. Assist in the rigging of scenery. Build temporary stage platforms and audience seating. Set up stage and event spaces from supplied diagrams and instructions. Work directly with clients during the set-up and operation of events. Provide additional support to MC personnel on events and special projects.

Physical Demands

  • Repeatedly lift and move theatrical equipment weighing up to 65 pounds using safe lifting and moving techniques in preparation for performances.
  • Push/pull theatrical equipment weighing up to 1,200 pounds using safe pushing and pulling techniques.
  • Detect audio and visual problems during rehearsals and performances. Ascend and descend narrow ladders between floors backstage.
  • Work on ladders, personnel lifts, catwalks, loading bridges, and theatrical grids up to 100' above the stage floor.
  • Work in low-light areas and/or areas of restricted physical access. Operate electrical or sound equipment.




Work Environment

  • Work is scheduled on an as-needed basis in response to scheduled performances and events.

  • Position occasionally requires work in areas where hazardous materials (spray paint or cleansers) are present.
