The New-to-Specialty RN role is specifically designed for experienced nurses with no previous nursing experience in adult ambulatory oncology. New-to-Specialty RNs receive specialized orientation support through the New-to-Specialty RN Fellowship program to assist in their transition to practice.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs and evaluates patients' adaptation to health changes
  • Develops a plan of care based on patients' disease, symptoms, and response to treatment
  • Educates patients, families, and caregivers on disease processes, treatment, side effects and symptom management
  • Coordinates with inter-disciplinary team to ensure continuity of care
  • Refers patients, families and caregivers as appropriate to other clinical resources/professionals such as social work, home health care, clinical nutrition, etc.
  • Implements, evaluates and modifies plan of care
  • Integrates research and evidence based knowledge into clinical practice

In addition to primary responsibilities listed in job description, the New-to-Specialty RN will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Performs comprehensive nursing assessment of general oncology, immunotherapy, and/or blood and marrow transplant patients as pertinent to the specific clinical position, which includes review of relevant lab studies, review of systems, and assessment of pain, distress and other symptoms.
  • Operates unit-specific processes and equipment as outlined in defined clinical practice standards and competencies.
  • Works with a wide range of staff as part of an interdisciplinary team including physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and ancillary staff.
  • Provides care adapted to individual patient needs based on policies/procedures and guidelines.
  • Consults, collaborates with, and participates in patient care with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare team members, and implements clinical practice according to institutional standards.
  • Engages in New-to-Specialty RN Fellowship clinical curriculum and competency development which support the clinical functions and duties pertinent to the specific clinical department and the organization.
  • Participates in weekly self-reflections and meetings with the New-to-Specialty RN Fellowship team to facilitate reflective practice.
  • Maintains open communication with supervisor, preceptors, and New-to-Specialty RN Fellowship team regarding challenges or concerns during the New-to-Specialty RN Fellowship program.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license or multistate RN license.
  • Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years
  • Additional certification may be required dependent upon department.
  • Critical thinking skills which promote best outcomes of patients and staff in a complex setting
  • Ability to exercise clinical judgment in patient care scenarios
  • Ability to organize and manage time and tasks independently
  • Communication skills in articulation, listening, and dealing with conflict
  • Ability to organize care with attention to safety and quality, specific to individual patient needs across the care continuum.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • 2+ years of nursing experience working closely with interdisciplinary team members in the complex care of patients

The hourly pay range for this position is from $43.38 to $81.93 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. Registered Nurses are paid on a step-scale basis and are also eligible for shift differentials and other pay premiums such as advanced degree, preceptor and certification.
