What we are looking for: Staff Chaplain - NOPD

The exempt position of Staff Chaplain - NOPD reports to the Senior Staff Chaplain NOPD and provides pastoral ministry of spiritual and emotional support to police officers, their families, civilian personnel affected by crime, and the larger community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities :

Due to the responsibilities of this position, the NOPD Staff Chaplain must be available by cell phone for texts, emails, and phone calls during and after work hours. Any device that receives company emails must have BCM’s mobile device management software and virus application installed. BCM will provide a communication stipend through payroll.

•Provide spiritual support, comfort, interest, and encouragement to officers, civilian employees, crime survivors, witnesses, and community members in times of crisis at work, home, hospitals, on scene, or other settings.

•Provide spiritual presence and leadership at events such as the annual inspection and memorial mass, award ceremonies, graduation, various holiday events, the entire Mardi Gras season (beginning with the first Friday of Mardi Gras parades and continuing through Mardi Gras day), and other events as requested;

•Provide on-call coverage on a rotating basis with the other police chaplains;

•Assist with referrals for additional services, death notifications, and whenever an officer requests support;

•Attend Roll Call regularly;

•Maintain records and provide reports as required by BCM and the New Orleans Police Department’s designated liaison;

•Inform the Senior Staff Chaplain, NOPD of needs, problems, and administrative matters on a regular basis;

•Maintain performance levels that are in keeping with the mission and philosophy of the New Orleans Police Department;

•Cooperate and participate in programs and meetings required by BCM, such as Spiritual Care Week;

•Reflect the values of BCM in all interactions;

•Foster positive relationships and communication between the police department and the community by attending Non-Pac meetings and community and group activities involving NOPD and working with faith-based organizations in each district as requested;

•Participate in ride-alongs as time permits;

•Provide roll call and in-service training, information, and resources in the areas of stress management, advanced medical directives and living wills, self-care, and ethics;

•Serve as a resource to officers and staff to meet other needs (i.e., perform weddings, funerals, etc.);

•Provide officers with information concerning sacramental ministry, religious/spiritual resources, and literature;

•Be available to other members of the Division for emotional and spiritual support, orientation, and consultation on ministry issues; and

•Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

•Master of Divinity or equivalent.

•Four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalent.

•Ecclesiastic endorsement with a Christian organization.

•Certification or certification eligible by the Association of Certified Christian Chaplains (ACCC), the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), or the National Association of VA Chaplains (NAVAC).

•Experience working with diverse cultures, experience in an inner-city and community-based setting, or experience in military chaplaincy or law enforcement settings.

•Excellent interpersonal skills.

•The ability to set goals and create and organize ways to meet goals in a timely manner.

•Ability to work quickly and accurately on administrative tasks.

•Ability to relate well to a diverse cultural and religious community in a wide variety of circumstances and settings.

•Possess knowledge of the characteristics of trauma and possess skills for crisis counseling.

•Be able to work independently and in a group setting.

•Ability to collect and analyze numerical and written data and verbal information to reach logical conclusions and ability to determine the time, place, and sequence of operations or actions required.

•The ability to actively listen.

•Strong written and oral communication skills.

•Ability to organize and effectively handle multiple projects and meet regular deadlines with consistency and accuracy.

•Good grammatical use of the English language.

•Ability to form and maintain durable relationships.

•Demonstrate leadership ability.

•Skilled in personal computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite).

•Possess independent judgment, personal initiative, sensitivity, and problem-solving skills.

•The ability to remain calm during stressful times and shift from one context to another quickly.

•Valid Louisiana driver’s license and appropriate auto insurance.
