Job Overview

The Department of Sociology at the University of Cincinnati (UC) invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of either Assistant or Associate Professor. Rank and salary will be commensurate with credentials. The position will begin August 15, 2025, and evidence of completion of the PhD by August 14, 2025, is required. We are seeking applicants conducting research in the areas of environment, environmental justice, climate, disasters, or sustainability. The position comes with an opportunity to be affiliated with the newly created interdisciplinary School of Environment and Sustainability (SEaS) and an expectation to teach at least one course which contributes to SEaS degree programs. The selected candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda, generate external research funding, teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute service to the department.

Sociology is a PhD-granting department with about 150 majors and minors and 35 active PhD students, about two-thirds of whom are domestic students of color or international students. The department houses the endowed Kunz Center for Social Research, which supports faculty and graduate student research. Sociology is also one of 15 units affiliated with the Charles Phelps Taft Research Center, which disburses over one million dollars per year in research and travel grants to faculty and students

Essential Functions

  • Maintain an active research agenda (including the pursuit of publications and research funding) in the area of environment, environmental justice, climate, disasters, or sustainability.
  • Teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, including at least one course (for example, a course in Environmental Sociology) which contributes to the SEaS program. Additional Sociology courses are negotiated with the department head. This position carries a 2/2 teaching load (with a one-course reduction per year until tenure). Courses may be taught online or face-to-face, depending on departmental needs.
  • Contribute service to the department and university, to be negotiated annually with the department head.

Minimum Requirements

Must have all of the following prior to the effective date of appointment:

  • A PhD in Sociology or a closely related field.
  • Research experience in the areas of environment, environmental justice, climate, disasters, or sustainability, as evidenced by:
    • For Assistant-level applicants: the dissertation, or one lead-authored publication, or one lead-authored conference presentation, in one of these fields.
    • For Associate-level applicants: a book, or 6 publications in peer-reviewed journals, in one of these fields.
