Job Description

Job Description:

The Boston Globe seeks an experienced editor with deep knowledge of visual arts, classical music, and theater to join our Living/Arts editing team. The ideal candidate is an excellent editor with creative ideas and a strategic mindset, impeccable news judgment, and the organizational skills to manage multiple robust arts beats. You will direct our digital-first coverage of these beats, assigning, guiding, and editing everything from breaking news, to enterprise features and special projects, critics’ notebooks, and reviews. You know how to interpret readership data and are motivated to help build our subscriber base, identifying the news, features, and quick hits our readers need most. And you enjoy a culture of experimentation, collaboration, and discovery. Ensuring the Globe breaks important news first, holds New England arts institutions accountable, and examines issues of equity everywhere in the arts ecosystem are central to this job’s mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Closely follow Boston’s arts scene as well as national trends.
  • Attend local shows, read widely, develop sources among local leaders.
  • Seek out scoops and fresh story ideas, and identify trends.
  • Develop creative ideas for special packages and sections, and work with the department’s digital editor to plan engagement strategies.
  • Supervise seasoned critics and early-career reporters and freelancers to develop the most compelling stories and angles and shape and polish their copy.
  • Seek out and develop new freelance talent with diverse points of view.
  • Assign photos and work with the art department on design and illustration concepts.
  • Write web, SEO, and native headlines designed to capture the widest readership possible.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher and at least five years of post-college editing experience in arts and entertainment.
  • The editing chops to guide, shape, and polish stories to meet Boston Globe standards.
  • Project management and organizational skills and the ability to handle tight deadlines.
  • Excellent news judgment, along with a sense for the stories and angles that will grab readers and drive engagement.
  • Subject matter expertise in the arts and entertainment; familiarity with the Boston arts scene a plus.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.

Please submit a resume and cover letter that details your relevant experience and includes links to three published stories/packages you edited that demonstrate your skills.
