Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of an RN, the anesthesia technician functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team in maintaining anesthesia supplies and equipment, and, as in the role of logistics technician, assists patients as appropriate. Demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the unit and the organization. Applies good interpersonal and communication process utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills to achieve organizational service goals of customer satisfaction and a positive work environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Familiar with all anesthesia types (General, MAC, Regional, TIVA, Spinal/Epidural).
  • Assists anesthesiologist with direct patient care and during insertion of Swan-Ganz, central venous pressure, insertion of arterial lines, and difficult venipuncture as requested.
  • Assists anesthesiologist with direct patient care during induction, assists in positioning patient for anesthesia blocks, and with patient transport to ICU/CCU/PACU as requested.
  • Conducts daily maintenance of all anesthesia equipment to ensure that anesthesia supplies, monitors, and machines are checked, stocked, and ready for use (i.e., soda lime, CO2 line, breathing circuits, LMAs, and endotracheal blades).
  • Performs routine set-up, take down, and supply of the anesthesia machines and carts (Surgery, GI Lab, and Cath Lab).
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance; trouble-shoots as needed (i.e., soda lime changes as indicated by discoloration and disposes of according to standards).
  • Coordinates with the OR, Pharmacy, Materials Management, and Biomed Engineering as needed for supplies, needs, and concerns and follows through as appropriate.
  • Ensures anesthesia machine and work areas are cleaned before and after each case.
  • Ensures that all special equipment is ready for patients based on age and weight.
  • Understands setting up of IV lines and performs proficiently. Ensures the correct IV solutions are used in setup (double checks with an anesthesiologist).
  • Maintains infection control guidelines by implementing advanced practices regarding upper respiratory conditions (i.e., TB, MRSA, VRE).
  • In-services all new Perioperative Assistants on anesthesia supplies, location, and routines.
  • Accountable to the Manager and/or Director of Surgical Services.
  • Displays professional commitment and supports the unit team by promoting unity and teamwork among co-workers by maintaining a positive attitude and positive working relationships.
  • Responsible for understanding and participating in the organization-wide Performance Improvement Program through orientation, education, departmental and interdepartmental quality control, performance improvement, and quality planning activities.
  • Satisfactorily completes the orientation program.
  • Act as lead and preceptor for new assistant.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge/understanding of Surgical Environment: Unrestricted areas, Semi-restricted areas, Restricted areas, Positive pressure environment, Air exchanges closure of doors at all times, Surgical dress code, and recording of refrigerator and fluid/blanket warmer temperatures; protocol for out-of-range temperatures.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge/understanding of Infection Control: Hand washing, Use of gloves and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Use of foam antiseptic, and Decontamination of equipment prior to and after use.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge/understanding of Transportation: Patient identification using appropriate ID (verbalizes name and date of birth), Handling patients and their families, Patient safety (i.e., using brakes prior to patient transfer, bariatric considerations), Holding and transport of specimens to Lab, Obtaining and delivering blood products to and from OR as needed, Transportation of limb/amputation, and understands proper body mechanics and patient movement techniques.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge/understanding of Specialty Equipment: Knowledge of operations, Regular OR bed Skytron, Bariatric OR bed Maquet, Hana table, Jackson table (flat top, lateral, 1800 flip, prone), Fracture table, Wilson frame, and Radiolucent table/vascular table.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge/understanding of Electrical Safety: Checks all electrical equipment for proper working condition, Checks plugs and power cords for fraying/damage, Knowledge of red outlet function and location, Appropriate use of extension cords, remove damaged or non-functioning equipment immediately and contacts BioMed, and Ensures all clinical alarms are audible and not disabled.
  • Keeps assigned area tidy at all times.
  • Assists and maintains clutter-free department/hallways.
  • Handling and change-out of portable gases.
  • Maintains contact with Charge Nurse or designee at all times.
